Edward Stanley, 17th Earl of Derby, full name Edward George Villiers Stanley (1865-1948), British politician, son of Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th earl of Derby. As an aide-de-camp for British general Lord Roberts, Stanley served in the Boer War (1899-1902), a conflict between the British and Afrikaners in what is now South Africa. From 1900 to 1903 he was financial secretary to the War Office, from 1903 to 1905 he was postmaster general, and from 1922 to 1924 he was secretary for war. Under the coalition government of Prime Minister David Lloyd George, Stanley was secretary for war from December 1916 to January 1918 and ambassador to France from April 1918 to November 1920.
