Erebus (mythology), in Greek mythology, son of Chaos and husband of Nyx, meaning night. Their children were Aether, the upper air, and Hemera, day. The name Erebus, meaning darkness, was also given to the gloomy region through which the dead were thought to pass before entering Tartarus, the deeper region of Hades. More from Encarta
