Epimetheus (mythology), in Greek mythology, brother of the god Prometheus. Prometheus warned Epimetheus to refuse any gifts from Zeus, ruler of the gods. However, after Zeus created Pandora, the first human woman, Epimetheus disregarded his brother’s warning and married her. The gods had given a box to Pandora, with the warning that she should never open it. After curiosity overcame Pandora and she opened her mysterious box, innumerable plagues and sorrows flew out. According to legend, humanity was forever cursed because of Pandora’s disobedience.
