1. member of Nigerian people: a member of a people living in western Africa, especially in southeastern Nigeria. During the 1960s, the Ibo formed the breakaway state of Biafra. Fighting with Nigerian troops and severe famine led to enormous loss of life, and the Ibo capitulated in 1970.

2. language of Ibo: a language spoken in southern parts of Nigeria and in some areas of Niger, belonging to the Kwa group of Niger-Congo languages. Native speakers: 17 million.
