Ti·mor-Les·te [ t mawr léstay ] independent nation on the eastern half of the island of Timor in Southeast Asia. Its annexation by Indonesia in 1975 led to protracted internal conflict, and though a plebiscite for independence in 1999 met with Indonesian military intervention, it gained full independence in 2002. Capital: Dili. Population: 997,853 (2003).
