| Rob·ben Is·land [ róbb'n lənd ] island 12 km/7 mi. off the coast of Cape Town, used for centuries as a place for isolating the sick or confining criminals and political prisoners. During the apartheid era many political activists were imprisoned there, including Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki, and Walter Sisulu. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. |
