| Ro·a·noke Is·land [ r ə nōk lənd ] island off eastern North Carolina. Expeditions sent out by the English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh twice attempted to establish colonies. The first returned to England in 1586, the second disappeared between 1587 and 1591. |
