| Pan·a·ma Ca·nal Zone [ pànnə m kə nál zōn ] narrow strip of land about 16 km (10 mi) wide extending across the Isthmus of Panama alongside the Panama Canal. Formerly administered by the United States, the Canal Zone was abolished in 1979 when it came under Panamanian civil control. |
