method of ion deflection: a technique for deflecting the ions in the electron beam in a cathode-ray tube to prevent damage to the phosphor caused by the ions bombarding the screen. Typically, a magnet is used to deflect the beam through a tiny opening in the electron gun while the heavier ions are deflected less and remain trapped in the gun.
