1. autonomous region and former kingdom in northwestern Spain. It contains the provinces of La Coruña, Lugo, Orense, and Pontevedra. Capital: Santiago de Compostela. Population: 2,731,669 (1991).

2. historic region in eastern Europe. A former principality, it has belonged to Poland and Austria, and is now divided between southeastern Poland and western Ukraine. |
