Fred·er·icks·burg [ fréddriks bùrg ] city of northeast Virginia north of Richmond. It was the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War in December 1862, when Robert E. Lee's smaller Confederate force defeated Ambrose Burnside's Union forces. Population: 20,076 (2002 estimate).
