His·pan·io·la [ hìspən yṓlə ] island in the Caribbean Sea, lying southeast of Cuba and west of Puerto Rico, and divided between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Originally the home of an Arawak people, it was colonized by Spain after Christopher Columbus landed there in 1492 and named it Española. The western part, now Haiti, was ceded to France in 1697.
