Nazi paramilitary organization: a uniformed Nazi paramilitary organization originally forming Adolf Hitler's personal bodyguard and later used as a militia, its members being known as storm troopers or Brown Shirts. The Sturmabteilung assisted Hitler's rise to power, but after the assassination of its leader Erich Röhm in 1934 it lost influence to the SS.
