German artistic movement: any one of a series of artistic movements in Germany and Austria in the 1890s, influenced by impressionism, art nouveau, and symbolism. The most famous such movement was the Vienna Sezession formed by Gustav Klimt and other artists who could not find a traditional outlet for their work.
