I·wo Ji·ma [ wə jmə, wō jmə ] largest of the Volcano Islands of Japan, in the western Pacific Ocean, east of Taiwan. It was the scene of heavy fighting during World War II when U.S. Marines invaded and captured the Japanese air base there in February and March 1945.
