| Hamp·ton Roads [ hàmptən rṓdz ] deep-water channel and commercial waterway in southeastern Virginia at the point where the James, Nansemond, and Elizabeth rivers empty into Chesapeake Bay. The Port of Hampton Roads comprises the cities of Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth, and Norfolk and is one the country's busiest ports and shipbuilding centers. In 1862 Hampton Roads was the site of a Civil War naval confrontation between the ironclads Monitor and Merrimack. |
