Get·tys·burg [ gétteez bùrg ] borough and county seat of Adams County in southern Pennsylvania, southwest of Harrisburg. It was the site of a decisive Northern victory during the Civil War on July 1-3 1863, when George Meade's troops halted the northward advance of Robert E. Lee. Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address was delivered there on November 19, 1863, dedicating the Gettysburg National Cemetery. Population: 8,014 (2005 estimate).
