19th-century French Commune: a French insurrectionary committee established in Paris in 1871 in opposition to the national government and the peace terms it negotiated to end the Franco-Prussian War. National troops were sent from Versailles to crush the Communards, which they did in a number of notoriously bloody conflicts.
