Dag·e·stan [ dgi stn ] autonomous republic in the Caucasus region of southern Russia, bordered by Kalmykia to the north, the Caspian Sea to the east, Azerbaijan to the south, and Chechnya and Georgia to the west. The administrative center is Makhachkala.

Population: 2,176,500 (2002 estimate).
