Cook Is·lands [ kk ləndz ] group of predominantly volcanic islands in the South Pacific, lying approximately 4,500 km (2,800 mi) south of Hawaii and 2,600 km (1,600 mi) northeast of New Zealand. They are self-governing in free association with New Zealand. Population: 11,870 (2009 estimate).
