| An·tie·tam [ an ttəm ] village in northwestern Maryland, southeast of Sharpsburg. On September 17, 1862, Robert E. Lee's army crossed nearby Antietam Creek and was repelled by George McClellan's forces in one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. In the South, the engagement is usually called the Battle of Sharpsburg. |
