very large bacterium: a very large bacterium, typically between 0.1 and 0.3 mm in size but sometimes larger, found in sediments off the coast of western Namibia. It uses nitrates as its source of oxygen in oxidizing and breaking down sulfur compounds. Latin name Thiomargarita namibiensis.
