Spelling Note

plum or plumb? Do not confuse the spelling of plum and plumb, which sound similar. Plum denotes a fruit or, by extension, its dark reddish purple color, as in a a plum tree, a gorgeous plum velvet, or something highly desirable, as in a plum contract. Plumb means "a weight attached to a line," "in a vertical position," or "exactly," as in a plumb line, plumb in the middle.
