point·er [ póyntər ]


noun  (plural point·ers)
Definition:
 
1. cane used for pointing: a stick or cane used, especially by a teacher or lecturer, to point something out, e.g. on a chart or large map

2. indicator on measuring device: a needle that moves around on a measuring instrument to point to part of a dial

3. helpful hint: a piece of advice or information given to help somebody achieve something or do something the right way
My coach gave me a few pointers on how to hold the racket.

4. sign indicating situation: a sign of what is happening or what might happen in the future

5. hunting dog: a hunting dog, usually with a shorthaired white coat with colored patches, belonging to a breed trained to indicate the whereabouts of shot game by standing still with the muzzle and tail outstretched
