pomp [ pomp ]

noun
Definition:

1. ceremonial splendor: a display of great splendor and magnificence

2. self-importance: an ostentatious and vain display of importance

[14th century. Via French pompe and Latin pompa< Greek pompē "solemn procession, sendoff, escort" < pempein "send"]

Cultural Note

Pomp and Circumstance, an orchestral work (parts 1 to 4: 1901-1907; part 5: 1930) by British composer Edward Elgar. The title of this series of five military marches (op. 39) derives from the reference in Shakespeare's Othello (Act III, scene iii) to the "pride, pomp, and circumstance of glorious war."
