1. hole in road: a hole in the surface of a road

2. vertical hole in limestone area: a vertical deep hole or shaft formed naturally in limestone regions by the erosive action of running water

3. hole in river bed: a bowl-shaped hole in the bed of a river or stream, formed by the abrasive action of stone, gravel, or ice being churned in an eddy
