1. powder used for producing image: powdered charcoal or other fine powder sprinkled over a stencil to reproduce the main lines of a pattern or design on the surface beneath the stencil

2. powder to stop ink from running: a very fine powder formerly used to stop ink from spreading on unglazed paper
