early Indic language: an Indic language belonging to a group spoken in northern India from approximately 400 bc to ad 1000. Prakrits are Indic languages that developed from Sanskrit, the most well-known being Pali.

[Mid-18th century. < Sanskrit prākṙta "natural, vernacular" < pra- "forward" + kṙta- "made"]
