Definition:
 
1. transitive and intransitive verb make something pure: to rid something of harmful, inferior, or unwanted contaminants, or get rid of harmful, inferior, or unwanted contaminants
We use special filters to purify the water.

2. transitive verb make somebody spiritually pure: to free somebody of sin, guilt, or defilement, e.g. in a ceremony or a ritual cleansing
