Definition:
 
1. transitive and intransitive verb close opening: to move something into a position that blocks or covers an opening, or move into such a position
leaned over to shut the window

2. transitive verb stop access or exit: to prevent entrance to or exit from something, e.g. by locking doors
Rising water levels meant that they had to shut the tunnel.

3. transitive verb fold parts closed: to close something by bringing its covering or parts together
