Cultural Note

The Three Sisters, a play (1900) by the Russian dramatist Anton Chekhov. Set in rural Russia, this powerful and compassionate study of the quiet desperation of bourgeois life centers on the three Pozarov sisters. Stifled by the dreariness of local society, they look to the officers of the local garrison for romance and entertainment. But when the army departs, the sisters are left with only their dreams and each other.
