Slaughterhouse-Five, a novel (1970) by Kurt Vonnegut. In this highly original blend of realism and science fiction, World War II veteran Billy Pilgrim is kidnapped by aliens who enable him to revisit his past. He subsequently relives the Allied firebombing of Dresden in 1945, an event witnessed by Vonnegut himself and here presented as a symbol of the unending cruelty and suffering of humanity.
