noun
Definition:

1. raised line connecting mathematical terms: a horizontal line above two or more members of a compound mathematical expression, used to show that the expression is to be treated as a single term. Parentheses, brackets, and braces are used more frequently for this purpose than is the vinculum.

[Mid-17th century. < Latin, "fetter, bond" < vincire "tie, fasten"]
