vane

vane [ vayn ] (plural vanes)


noun 
Definition:
 
1. engineering rotating blade: a flat blade mounted as part of a set in a circle so as to rotate under the action of wind or liquid. Windmill sails and turbine blades are examples.

2. meteorology 
Same as  weather vane


3. arms stabilizer on missile: a stabilizing or guiding blade on a missile

4. birds blade of bird's feather: the flat part of a feather, consisting of interlocking rows of barbs. Each feather has two vanes, one on each side.

5. tools part of leveling rod: the moving part on a leveling rod

6. compass compass or quadrant sight: a sight on a compass or quadrant
