Word History

Bed meant both "sleeping place" and "garden plot" in Old English, and if the latter is the original sense, it could mean that the word comes ultimately from a prehistoric Germanic ancestor meaning "dig" (which is also the ancestor of English fossil), and that the underlying notion of a bed was originally of a sleeping place dug or scraped in the ground, like an animal's lair.
