Cultural Note

Silent Spring, (1962) by Rachel Carson. In passionate prose it presented to a popular audience evidence that the indiscriminate use of pesticides like DDT was killing wildlife. It foresaw an eerie future: "A spring without voices. On the mornings that had once throbbed with the dawn chorus of scores of bird voices there was now no sound; only silence lay over the fields and woods and marsh." Silent Spring was fiercely attacked by the chemical industry, but its findings were endorsed by a Presidential Commission, and its publication is credited with launching the environmental movement in the United States.
