Vol·go·grad [ vólgə gràd, vṓlgə gràd ] industrial and port city in southwestern Russia on the Volga River. It is an important rail junction and inland port. In World War II, the city was subjected to a long siege by German forces that proved to be one of the turning points of the war. Population: 1,034,700 (2007 estimate).
