Shet·land Is·lands [ shétlənd ləndz ] group of about 150 islands lying 209 km (130 mi) north of mainland Scotland. The islands serve as a base for the North Sea oil industry. Mainland is the chief island. Capital: Lerwick. Population: 21,988 (2001).
