| Bes·sa·ra·bi·a [ bèssə ráybee ə ] historic region in southeastern Europe, between the Prut and Dniester rivers, corresponding roughly to present-day Moldova and part of Ukraine. A much-contested area, it was a province of Romania between 1918 and 1940. |
