salesman

sales·man [ sáylzmən ] (plural sales·men [ sáylzmən ])

noun
Definition:

man employed to sell something: a man who sells goods or services, either in a store or by contacting potential customers

Cultural Note

Death of a Salesman, a play (1949) by Arthur Miller. The tragic story of Willy Loman, an ageing salesman tormented by an overwhelming sense of failure, highlights the false values of contemporary consumer society and questions traditional ideas of success and failure. It was made into a movie by Volker Schlöndorff in 1985. As a result of the power of the play, the term Willy Loman came to mean a man who has tragically sacrificed or sold his own life, and that of his family, in pursuit of the so-called American Dream.
