sac or sack? Do not confuse the spelling of sac and sack, which sound similar. The word sac is largely restricted to scientific contexts, denoting a small bag or pouch inside an animal or plant, as in air sac, yolk sac. It is also found in cul-de-sac, meaning "a road with no exit at one end." Sack is a more common word, denoting a large cloth or paper bag, as in a sack of potatoes. It is also used as a noun or verb referring to dismissal from a job: She threatened to give him the sack. They will sack anybody who is persistently late for work.
