Found in neighboring Mississippi and East Texas, the term pirogue, as well as the distinctive artifact itself, is characteristic of Louisiana dialect. Although it occurs across the state, north of the Atchafalaya River, it is nearly twice as common in the southern part of the state, the Cajun bayou country, west of New Orleans.
