Definition:
 
1. symbols showing pronunciation: a set of letters and symbols used to represent the sounds of human speech in writing

2. words representing letters: a set of words representing alphabetical letters, e.g. "Delta" for D and "Tango" for T, used in radio or telephone communications. The phonetic alphabet is used to distinguish between letters that sound similar, to spell out words, and in code names or call signs.
