Cultural Note

Oliver Twist, a novel (1837-1839) by the British writer Charles Dickens. It tells the tale of an abandoned child who runs away from his workhouse home to London, where he falls in with a band of criminals led by Fagin and his young assistant, a streetwise pickpocket called the Artful Dodger. The novel inspired a musical, Oliver! (1960) and several movies, most notably David Lean's 1948 adaptation.
