Trip·o·li·ta·ni·a [ tri pòlli táynee ə, trìppəlli táynee ə ]ancient region surrounding Tripoli in northwestern Libya. Founded as a Phoenician colony in the 7th century bc, it was captured by the Turks in the 16th century, and occupied by Italy between 1912 and 1941.
