Cultural Note

Star Trek, a television series created in 1966 by U.S. writer and producer Gene Roddenberry (1921-1991). The adventures of the Starship Enterprise, a 23rd-century spacecraft on a mission "to boldly go where no man has gone before," initially ran for 79 episodes. The popularity of the series later gave rise to numerous movie spinoffs, the follow-up television series Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Enterprise, and a worldwide network of dedicated fans known as Trekkies.
