Cultural Note

Treasure Island, a novel (1883) by Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson. This classic romance recounts young Jim Hawkins's adventures with a treacherous band of pirates searching for lost treasure on a distant island. The book's most memorable character is one-legged pirate Long John Silver, who carries a pet parrot given to shrieking "Pieces of eight!".
