Cultural Note

Gulliver's Travels, a satire (1726) by Irish writer Jonathan Swift. It is a four-part account of the adventures of a castaway, ship's surgeon Lemuel Gulliver. First washed ashore in Lilliput, peopled by tiny inhabitants, he subsequently finds himself in Brobdingnag, the kingdom of giants. The third part of the novel deals with his time on the flying island of Laputa and the neighboring continent, occupied by scientists and philosophers, while the final part takes him to the land of the Houyhnhms, where horses rule with benevolent reason over the brutish human Yahoos. Through the characters and situations encountered by Gulliver in his travels Swift takes every opportunity to satirize the people and practices of his time with varying degrees of humor and bitterness.
