| Definition: |
| |
flute with mouth hole on side: a flute with the mouth hole on top of the barrel near one end. The player blows across the hole while holding the flute in a sideways horizontal position. The modern flute used to be known as the transverse flute in order to distinguish it from an end-blown flute such as a recorder.
