noun  (plural time·outs)
Definition:
 
1. sports time during which game stops: in some games, a break taken to allow players to rest, receive medical treatment, confer, or be substituted

2. comput lack of computer response: an interruption in the operation of a computer when a device such as a printer or disk drive does not respond to a command in a predetermined amount of time. A timeout usually results in a message to the user giving the option of retrying or canceling the command.
